Questions After 5 Die in Avalanche

Colorado's deadliest avalanche in 50 years killed 5. The group, many of whom had just met, came together as part of the Rocky Mountain High Backcountry Gathering, an event intended to promote backcountry snowboarding and avalanche safety. Questions about how such incidents can be prevented and links to some of the best coverage.

Recalled WRSI Trident Whitewater Helmet



WRSI Whitewater Helmets Recall

The Whitewater Research & Safety Institute (WRSI) has recalled two models of whitewater helmets due to the potential for the chinstrap buckle to fail. The recalled models are the Trident and Moment and there are a variety of styles and colors. No injuries have been reported. OSI has recommended WRSI helmets, though these have been different models.

Recalled US Divers Martinique Jr Mask



Youth Snorkeling Mask Recalls

U.S. Divers and Aqua Lung Sport have recalled two models of youth snorkeling masks due to a risk of glass shattering. The recalled models are the Santa Cruz Jr. (sold under the U.S. Divers and Aqua Lung brands), and the Martinique LX Jr. Snorkeling masks (pictured at left).

Via Ferrata Climber and Cables



Multiple Via Ferrata Recalls

In August 2012 a climber on a via ferrata in Tirol, Austria fell several meters and both of his energy absorbing lanyards broke. This incident has led to reevaluation of via ferrata sets and recalls by AustriAlpin, CT, Edelrid, Edelweiss, Mammut, Ocun, Salewa, Singing Rock, Stubai & Wild Country.

Distributor Liberty Mountain has recalled the Singing Rock Easy Go XP Lock Via Ferrata Lanyard. Worldwide there have been a large number of via ferrata lanyards from different manufacturers recalled over the past year. Given these widespread recalls, users of ANY such equipment should check with the manufacturer to ensure their product has not been recalled.

GoPro video shot by a skier caught in an avalanche on Nemesis Mountain on the Montana-Idaho border. Good footage of the skier going down in the slide and audio of the rescue effort. This same peak was the setting for the powerful avalanche fatality documentary A Dozen More Turns.

Columbia Heated Jacket Recall

Columbia Sportwear has recalled 7 models of their 2012 Omni-Heat™ electric heated jackets due to a burn hazard. The heated inner wrist cuff can overheat, posing a burn hazard. The recall involves the Men's Circuit Breaker™ II, Electro AMP™,  Electro™ Interchange, Electric Big Game™ and Women's Circuit Breaker™ II, Electro AMP™, and Electro™ Interchange Jackets. Certain batteries in jackets have also been listed in a separate recall. The product can be returned for a refund.
