Petzl Ecrin Roc Discontinued

Discontinued Petzl Ecrin Roc HelmetThe popular Petzl Ecrin Roc Helmet has been discontinued. It is extremely popular with outdoor programs due to its durability and adjustability. Available for more than two decades, the Ecrin Roc is likely the most widely used helmet for climbing, mountaineering, rope course, canyoneering and caving programs. While newer plastic and foam helmets do shave off ounces (and some models may offer better protection from certain impacts), few models have proven themselves as up to the abuse of heavy program use as the Ecrin Roc has.

Production of the Ecrin Roc has already ended but the helmets are still available. If you need a few to supplement your existing supply, they’re still available from some retailers.

What other climbing helmet models have you found work well for outdoor programs?

In other helmet related news, Black Diamond Equipment has acquired POC, the upstart Swedish manufacturer of protective gear for action sports. Helmets, body armor, goggles, eyewear, and gloves from POC have been rapidly gaining traction in the skiing and biking markets. This is an interesting addition to the Black Diamond brand lineup (which also includes Gregory Packs) and we hope it leads to more innovation in helmets and other protective gear. More information on the $45 million acquisition, concluded on July 3rd, is in this press release on the NASDAQ website.
