Volunteer Risk Management Forum

Volunteer Leader Training"A Discussion on Volunteer Leader Risk Management" is a pre-conference session at the 20th annual Wilderness Risk Management Conference, which will be in Grand Teton National Park this year. The pre-conference in on September 30th, with the main conference running the 30th through October 2nd.

As risk management in professionally led outdoor programs continues to improve, how do volunteer based programs fit in? As leader certification increases, how are volunteers trained? What should expectations be for volunteers working with youth? What are the most relevant legal concerns? With a focus on small-group discussions, the topics will be adjusted to fit the interests of participants via a pre-conference survey. At the 20th Wilderness Risk Management Conference, we will build on 8 years of volunteer focused WRMC sessions and explore next steps for volunteer programs.

The session will be organized and facilitated by the Sierra Club's Mel MacInnis and Outdoor Safety Institute's Alex Kosseff. They will be joined by attorney Catherine Hansen-Stamp who will present on legal issues related to volunteer outdoor leaders and facilitate associated discussion. The goal of the session is to bring together a group of representatives from volunteer driven outdoor programs. This group will work to identify the most pressing risk management issues facing volunteer driven outdoor programs and share creative solutions to these issues. We will also consider how to continue to support one another after the session and conference adjourn.

We want you! If you volunteer in an outdoor leadership capacity or work with volunteer outdoor leaders, this session is for you. After 8 years of volunteer risk management sessions led by representatives of the Appalachian Mountain Club, Colorado Mountain Club, Outdoor Recreation Georgia Tech, Outdoor Safety Institute, and Sierra Club, we're looking to open up a broader dialogue on remaining challenges. If you have any questions please contact Alex at OSI. We look forward to seeing you in spectacular Grand Teton National Park.

This is a pre-conference session at the Wilderness Risk Management Conference. It will be held from 8:00am-noon on September 30th at the Jackson Lake Lodge in Grand Teton National Park. You must pre-register for the session and there is a additional $40 charge for the preconference. The WRMC is the preeminent conference in the outdoor risk management field and well worth attending even without the volunteer session. Registration and additional information is at http://www.nols.edu/wrmc/.

Hike Invitation: This is a morning session. There are some great half-day sessions planned for the afternoon. If you don't want to join in any of those sessions, Alex and Mel invite you to join them on a leaderless hike in Grand Teton National Park. This is an informal opportunity to continue the morning's discussions amongst the fall colors of the Tetons.
