Alex is the Founder and President of the Outdoor Safety Institute and Executive Director of the American Mountain Guides Association. He is author of both editions of the AMC Guide to Outdoor Leadership. The former Leadership and Volunteer Relations Director for the Appalachian Mountain Club, Alex developed the first risk management systems for that organization’s 9,000 annual professionally and volunteer led outdoor programs. He has conducted over 50 risk management reviews of outdoor education, outdoor recreation, service learning, and conservation programs.

Sir Donald, CanadaIn addition to his management experience with the Appalachian Mountain Club, Alex’s consulting work and his books are informed by his extensive field leadership experience. Since 1991 he has instructed activities including backpacking, rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, canyoneering, backcountry skiing, canoeing, outdoor leadership, and wilderness medicine. His extensive experience with Outward Bound began in 1996. He has served various Outward Bound programs in the U.S. and Mexico as an instructor, staff trainer, course director, and safety reviewer–currently he works with Outward Bound California.

Alex has been retained as an expert witness and litigation consultant in a half-dozen legal cases. He has been retained by both plaintiff's and defense counsel on cases involving outdoor activities and indoor climbing.

Based in Boulder, Colorado, he is an active outdoor instructor, climber, backcountry skier, paddler, and wilderness enthusiast.
